California Governor Gavin Newsom recently signed an executive order that will ban the sales of newly built gas-powered cars by the year 2035. He said the ban would help in the fight against climate change as more people make the switch to electric, zero-emission vehicles. The order would still allow the sale and ownership of used cars.
According to data from the California New Car Dealers Association and IHS Markit, there were 250,566 new registrations for electric vehicles in 2019, a 3.6% increase over the previous year. Of these registrations, 104,762 were hybrids, 99,704 were light-duty electric vehicles and 46,160 were plug-in electric vehicles.
Leah Stokes, a political scientist at the University of California at Santa Barbara, supports the executive order, calling it “a big deal.” But John Bozella, an automotive group representative, said “neither mandates nor bans build successful markets.” Lauren Fix, an auto market analyst, says electric vehicles will become unaffordable because car manufacturers will have to buy carbon credits during the production process; this, she said, will push up the price of an electric vehicle to $40,000.
