The Brookings Institution said that, because these cars would automatically obey the speed limit and exhibit greater control than a driver-operated vehicle, there would be a dramatic reduction in accidents, fatalities and traffic infractions. According to Brookings, police stop 20 million drivers and answer to 6 million accidents each year. Every week, more than one officer is killed in a highway accident, accounting for 33% of line-of-duty deaths.
Brookings also showed a correlation between traffic flow and the economy. They argued that a reduction in traffic accidents and congestion would mean no interruptions in the transportation of goods. Employees would see improvements in their productivity and not have to worry about being late for work. Lastly, more people would be able to drive to the stores safely, resulting in an increase in consumer spending.
